The effect of contact experiences with people with psychiatric disability on the attitude of employability
Ryu Seung-Ah

Abstract
Attitude toward people with psychiatric disability plays a crucial role on the rehabilitation for them. In particular, the attitude of employability toward them influences getting and maintaining their job. The important factor which affects such an attitude has been considered contact experience with people who have suffered from mental illness. The purpose of this research was to examine the attitudes of employability toward people with psychiatric disability depending on the types of contact (family, friends, volunteer, and in publics), frequency, and perceptions with them.
Data were collected from total 593 graduate students and the measurement for the attitude of employability was reconstructed from ¡®attitudes towards the employability of persons with mental illness scale¡¯ (Hand & Tryssenaar, 2006) by using factor analysis. This study¡¯s findings demonstrated (1) that students think the most strongly that employers are resistant to hiring workers with psychiatric disability whereas they agree the most that income can change the quality of life for people with psychiatric disability, (2) that students who have people with psychiatric disability as family members showed the most positive attitudes, whereas ones who have contacted them in public answered the most negative responses, and (3) that positive impression from the contact experience resulted in favorable and better attitudes for the employability toward people with psychiatric disability regardless of the types of contact.
Research findings suggested the informative factors for persons working in vocational rehabilitation fields to consider the strategy for improving positive attitudes in our communities, which could help people with mental illness obtain a job and reintegrate into our communities.
